50°40′N 23°44′E / 50.667°N 23.733°E / 50.667; 23.733Turkowice [turkɔˈvit͡sɛ] is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Werbkowice, within Hrubieszów County, Lublin Voivodeship, in eastern Poland.[1] It lies approximately 10 kilometres (6 mi) south of Werbkowice, 20 km (12 mi) south-west of Hrubieszów, and 104 km (65 mi) south-east of the regional capital Lublin.
History
World War II
During the World War II, in March 1944, Turkowice was attacked by Polish partisans in reprisal for the Massacres of Poles in Volhynia carried out by Ukrainian nationalists. Eighty Ukrainian villagers were murdered and 150 houses destroyed.[2]
