The War of the Worlds (sh. Rat svjetova) je američki science fiction film snimljen 1953. u režiji Byrona Haskina, poznat kao jedno od klasičnih ostvarenja žanra, odnosno filmova koji je za glavni motiv imao vanzemaljsku invaziju.
Predstavlja adaptaciju istoimenog romana britanskog pisca H. G. Wellsa. Radnja je, pak, premještena u suvremenu Južnu Kaliforniju i prikazuje kako se tim naučnika na čelu sa dr. Claytonom Forresterom (koga tumači Gene Barry) istražuje pali meteorit za koga se na kraju ispostavi da predstavlja marsovsku letjelicu, odnosno prethodnicu flote letjelica koje započinju napadati i uništavati gradove i ljude na cijeloj Zemlji.
Film se, osim po mjestu radnje, od romana razlikovao i po tome što je imao snažan religijski, odnosno kršćanski naboj koji je bilo teško pomiriti sa ateističkim stavovima samoga Wellsa. Na film je u značajnoj mjeri uticao i Hladni rat, odnosno sve veća bojazan od njegove oružane eskalacije u kojoj bi se primijenilo nuklearno oružje sa apokaliptičnim posljedicama po civilizaciju i čovječanstvo. Relativno skroman budžet je, pak, producenta Georgea Pala natjerao da odustane od planova da film snimi u novoj 3-D tehnologiji, kao i da se za scene globalne destrukcije koristi vješto umontiranim dokumentarnim snimkama iz Drugog svjetskog rata, odnosno testova eksperimentalnog bombardera Northrop YB-49 koji u jednoj sceni neusšješno "napada" Marsovce s atomskom bombom. Isti ti obziri su Pala natjerali da u mnogim detaljima izmijeni mnoge fizičke i druge detalje Marsovaca iz romana, ali su ga također potakli na brojne domišljate i invetivne tehnike specijalnih efekata koji su kasnije nagrađeni Oscarom.
Film je nakon premijere imao veliki uspjeh i potakao je snimanje brojnih filmova sa sličnom tematikom. U velikoj je mjeri je uticao na brojne kasnije filmaše, među kojima se najviše ističe Steven Spielberg koje je neke od scena koristio kao inspiraciju za Bliske susrete treće vrste.
Sam film je decenijama kasnije dobio svoj nastavak u televizijskoj seriji koja se originalno prikazivala od 1988. do 1990. godine.
